About
Not just a DP.
A storyteller.
Lou Murrall is a Birmingham-based filmmaker, cinematographer and producer with 20 years' experience across commercials, music videos, short film and documentary. RTS award winner and co-founder of Mercian Films.

I’m a cinematographer who cares about one thing: telling stories that matter. Stories with weight, honesty, and a bit of grit.
I grew up on classic 80s and 90s cinema, the kind of films that had real texture, real characters, and images that stayed with you. That early nostalgia still shapes how I see the world through a lens. I’m always chasing frames that feel lived-in, not polished for the sake of it.
I’ve been in this game twenty years, starting out in rental and learning every piece of kit inside out. I worked my way up through the camera department, moved into lighting, and built the craft from the ground up. Cameras, lenses, light. I use all of it to make an audience feel something, not just watch something.
Credits include Land Rover, Adidas, RSC, Huawei and the BBC. RTS award winner.
I’m here to serve the story. Character, tone, and images with guts. Every frame should have a purpose. Every shot should move the audience somewhere, even if it makes them uncomfortable.
I’m drawn to narrative work that lingers. Bold, untold stories with a point of view. The kind that leaves people changed.
Along the way I’ve built up a solid kit base of my own, so I can roll into most jobs with enough gear to move fast, stay flexible, and deliver a premium image without relying on a massive hire list. When a project needs more, I know exactly what to pull in and how to crew it properly.

Off the clock
The bits that don't fit on a call sheet
The Villa
Born and bred in Brum. I've made grown actors cry on cue for twenty years, but nothing breaks me like a Villa defence in stoppage time.
Elvis Presley
The King. Not up for debate. If you think I'm wrong, we can't go on forever with Suspicious Minds.
Welsh hill walks
Where I go to think. Mostly about the summit, the view, and whether the café at the bottom is still open.
Being a dad
The hardest gig I've ever taken. Terrible pay, chaotic schedule, zero catering budget. Best crew I've ever had.
Boxing
Grew up on it, still watch it, still shoot it. Fighters and underdogs are basically my whole filmography.
The gym
Partly for my health. Mostly so I can carry the full kit up four flights of stairs, because the lift is never, ever working.
